It is (to me) shameful that Lindsay had to wait so long for Canada style medical treatment but it is a system the he and the rest of Canada want and put up with, free health care. There is a price for that though, a price that folks like Michael Moore will never have to put up with and that is waiting for care whether you NEED it or not. In this case, Lindsay thought he needed it and needed it now. Instead of waiting weeks for an MRI and months for brain surgery, he elected to come to the U.S. for treatment. Fine. He now wishes thought, to have Canada pay for it. Lindsay could have waited for treatment in Canada and Lindsay could have died by waiting but he might not have. He chose to not wait for treatment in Canada and to not wait for the waiver process so that he could legally get treatment in the U.S.. He chose to just go to the U.S. and get treatment on his dime which is fine but now he wants the government to reimburse him. I don't think I agree with that.
On the other hand, I certainly DON'T want a single payer system in the U.S.. I do want health care reform that makes sense. Reforms like a reduction in mandatory coverage and mandatory packages. There is NO reason that a man or woman should be forced to have pregnancy and prenatal care coverage in their insurance if they don't want it. A good start would be to stop government subsidies of business supplied health insurance. Yes this will hurt somewhat at first but with people more involved in the cost of health care, the more responsible they will be and the more "realistic" the costs will be.
But these issues are of no concern to Michael Moore as he has enough money to always get good health care whenever he wants it regardless of the system in place. So again, this is a situation where single payer is good enough for "the rest of us".
